Initially the weekend looked to be dry and moderately sunny, and I had resigned myself to a weekend out tramping (walking/hiking for you non NZers). However, as the week went on the rain stayed longer and by Thursday I was optimistic that paddling would be an option. Keen to try something new in the region work was put aside in favour of searching NZ Topo Maps and the packrafting and river guides for inspiration. Most rivers in the Tararuas have small catchments and therefore need to be caught during or just after rain due to dropping out very quickly. A good amount of water was coming down on the Friday though so I figured if I hustled after work I had a chance of catching something fun and so I started planning to head into the Waiohine and hope it would hold enough to float out on the Saturday.
